Dr. Mrs. Hedwig Kien Akum Ngwa Akumah is a distinguished Cameroonian scholar, cultural ambassador, gender advocate, and community development leader whose life reflects a remarkable blend of academic excellence, cultural pride, and dedicated service. Born on June 7, 1970, in Mankon-Mezam, Dr. Hedwig grew up immersed in the rich cultural heritage of the Mankon Fondom. The values of solidarity, respect, hard work, and collective responsibility that characterized her upbringing shaped her worldview and inspired a lifelong commitment to education, leadership, community development, and the empowerment of vulnerable populations. She is the daughter of Ma Doro and is married to Professor Gideon Akumah Ngwa. She is a loving mother and a devoted member of her extended family, widely admired for balancing professional excellence with strong family values. Her leadership is characterized by humility, compassion, integrity, and a deep sense of service. Dr. Hedwig's professional career spans more than three decades, encompassing education, academia, gender advocacy, community development, humanitarian work, and civil society engagement. She currently serves as President of MACUDA Buea and is the Founder and Executive Director of NIMO CARE, a women-led organization established in 2024 to promote gender equality, development, environmental awareness, research, cooperation, child protection, and humanitarian response. Her professional and academic work has taken her to several countries, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, and Sweden, where she has participated in conferences, professional engagements, and international discussions on development, gender, governance, and community resilience. She has also participated in high-level discussions at the United Nations General Assembly on the status of women and financing development in Africa. Background

*Education* Dr. Hedwig began her education at G.S. Ngomgham and C.S. Azire Small Mankon, before proceeding to Our Lady of Lourdes College Mankon and later CCAST Bambili. She pursued higher education at the University of Yaoundé, where she studied History-Geography, and subsequently received professional training at the Higher Teachers' Training College (ENS), Yaoundé. She later earned additional qualifications from the University of Buea. Her academic credentials include: PhD in Gender and Development Studies Master's Degree in Geography DIPES II Higher Teachers' Diploma Bachelor's Degree in Geography She has also received specialized training in Child Protection, Gender-Based Violence Case Management, and Education in Emergencies. Her multidisciplinary academic background has equipped her with the knowledge and experience to address complex issues relating to gender, governance, environmental management, and community transformation. Over the years, she taught at institutions including: Bilingual Grammar School Molyko Government Technical High School Bafut Government Technical High School Buea Government High School Great Soppo Her academic contributions also extended to the University of Buea, where she taught Gender and Environmental Issues in the Department of Women and Gender Studies. She also lectured at the National School of Local Administration (NASLA), Buea, where she taught Gender and Local Governance and Research Methodology, and at the National Post and Telecommunications School Annex, where she taught Administrative Geography. In 2024, she founded NIMO CARE, through which she provides strategic leadership, governance oversight, program direction, financial management, partnership building, and safeguarding accountability. Her work through NIMO CARE reflects her commitment to gender equality, environmental protection, child protection, humanitarian response, research, and community empowerment. *Civil Society and Professional Engagement* Dr. Hedwig's civil society engagements include NIMO CARE, the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation (LUKMEF) Cameroon, the South-West North-West Women’s Taskforce (SNWOT), where she has served as Vice Regional Coordinator for the Southwest and currently serves as Research and Advocacy Lead, as well as the African Women Gender Constituency. She is also a member of Nkah Ni Kwi Ni Mankon and the Aso'oh Women's Group of Buea, organizations committed to promoting women and girls. She is proudly LESA (Our Lady of Lourdes Ex-Student) of the 1982–1989 batch. Within LESA Buea, she has served as Vice President and currently serves as an Adviser to the Executive Council. *Faith and Family* Dr. Hedwig was born into a Roman Catholic family and married into a Presbyterian household. Her Christian faith has been an important part of her life and service. She has served as an Elder of the Presbyterian Church Molyko, a congregation of more than 3,000 members, as Vice President of the Christian Women Fellowship (CWF), and as a two-time member of the church's Project Committee. Her faith, family values, professional accomplishments, and cultural identity continue to inform her approach to leadership and community service.

Community Contributions

Dr. Hedwig Kien Akum Ngwa Akumah has made significant contributions to Mankon through cultural preservation, organizational leadership, education, women's empowerment, strategic development planning, and community service. *Mankon Students' Association (MASA)* During her high school and university years, Dr. Hedwig served in the leadership of the Mankon Student Association (MASA) as Vice President and Secretary. These early leadership experiences laid the foundation for her continued commitment to Mankon development. *MACUDA Buea* Dr. Hedwig has served as Vice President of MACUDA for two mandates and currently serves as President of MACUDA Buea. As the Pioneer Female President of MACUDA Buea, she has demonstrated that women can provide visionary and effective leadership within cultural and community organizations. Under her leadership, MACUDA Buea has strengthened unity among Mankon sons and daughters in Buea and surrounding communities while maintaining cordial and productive relationships with the Mankon Traditional Council and other MACUDA groups in the Coastal Zone and beyond. Her leadership has focused on: Promoting Mankon cultural identity Encouraging youth participation Supporting welfare initiatives Championing women's leadership Representing Mankon interests in development forums Preserving Mankon cultural values for future generations She also led the acquisition of landed property for MACUDA Buea (6 plots of 500m² totaling a land size of about 3,000m²), marking a significant milestone in the association's growth. *Promotion of the Mankon Language* One of Dr. Hedwig's most notable recent cultural initiatives has been her advocacy for the teaching of the Mankon mother tongue, Nɨɣam Nɨ Mankuŋə. Under her leadership, the initiative began in July 2025 with six pupils. In 2026, participation increased to eleven pupils, with learners demonstrating impressive progress in understanding and articulating basic Mankon within a short period of instruction. The positive response from parents and the performance of the learners have generated considerable enthusiasm for the continuation and expansion of the program. *Mankon Vision 2035* In 2015, while serving as Vice President of MACUDA Buea, Dr. Hedwig was elected to chair the Mankon Vision 2035 (MV-2035) Reflection Group. The initiative brought together Mankon sons and daughters from different backgrounds to reflect on: "The Place of Mankon in an Emerging Cameroon" and the Think, Act and Promote (TAPM) Mankon Project. The group held a major reflection meeting in Buea in August 2015, followed by a subsequent meeting in Douala in January 2016 focusing on strategies and implementation. The objective was to establish development goals for Mankon toward 2035 and identify strategies for achieving them. The outcomes were documented in two volumes and shared with MACUDA management and the Fon of Mankon. Although the sociopolitical crisis interrupted the initiative, Dr. Hedwig continues to advocate for the revival and utilization of the ideas generated through these reflections as Mankon pursues its development aspirations. *Cultural Preservation and Royal Engagement* Dr. Hedwig has demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving Mankon cultural traditions and strengthening the relationship between the Mankon community and its traditional institutions. She led the Mankon community in Buea to Limbe to participate in the Aza'aghə mourning rites of the late Fo Angwafo III and successfully organized the maiden visit of Fo Angwafo IV to the Southwest Region. Her approach to cultural preservation is grounded in the belief that development should respect indigenous identity while embracing innovation and progress. *MACUDA Constitutional Review* Following the reorganization of MACUDA in 2023, Dr. Hedwig led the challenging process of reviewing the organization's constitution. The work resulted in a constitution intended to serve MACUDA globally while taking geographical specificities into consideration. Her leadership in this process reflects her commitment to institutional development, good governance, and the long-term sustainability of MACUDA. *Women's Empowerment and Humanitarian Service* Through NIMO CARE and her involvement with various civil society organizations, Dr. Hedwig continues to advocate for women, girls, children, and vulnerable populations. Her work encompasses gender equality, gender-based violence prevention and response, child protection, environmental awareness, education in emergencies, humanitarian action, research, and community resilience.
